How to Connect to Wireless Networks in Windows 8 and Windows 8 1

How to Connect to Wireless Networks in Windows 8 and Windows 8 1

wirelessWindows 8 and 8.1 provide a simple interface for connecting to wireless networks. The procedure varies depending on whether or not the network broadcasts its name (also known as SSID - Service Set Identifier). If the name is broadcast, connecting to the network is as simple as entering a password. But enough talk, lets see how it works:
NOTE: Because the process is very similar between Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, in this guide we will use mostly screenshots taken in Windows 8.1. Where there are major differences, we also provide screenshots for Windows 8.

How to Connect to a Broadcasting Wireless Network

When a network broadcasts its name or SSID, it will appear in a list of available networks on all computers or devices within its range. To access this list in Windows 8 or 8.1 from theDesktop, simply click or tap the network icon from the system tray.

To access the list of available networks from the Start screen, move your cursor to the bottom right corner of the screen to open the charms. On a device with touch, swipe from the right side of the screen. Then, click or tap Settings and then Network.

Locate the network you wish to connect to and click or tap on its name. Select "Connect automatically" if you use this network regularly and Windows will automatically connect to the network any time youre within range.
connect, wireless, network, Windows 8, Windows 8.1
Click or tap "Connect" to continue.
NOTE: The airplane mode slider at the top of the list disables your wireless network adapter which will prevent your device from attempting to connect to any networks. This also preserves battery life when you dont need to work online.
Windows will scan for the security settings of the network and then prompt you for a security key. Enter the key carefully to ensure accuracy and click or tap Next. You can view it before pressing Next by clicking or tapping the eye-like icon on the right of the password field.

Once connected, youll be able to choose whether or not to enable sharing on the network.
If youre using Windows 8, you should see something similar to the screenshot below:
connect, wireless, network, Windows 8, Windows 8.1
If you are on a private network, such as one in your home, you should select "Yes, turn on sharing and connect to devices". If you are on a public network, you should select "No, dont turn on sharing or connect to devices".
And, if youre on Windows 8.1, the dialog looks a bit different:
connect, wireless, network, Windows 8, Windows 8.1
Either way, if you are on a private network, such as one in your home, you should select Yes. If you are on a public network, you should select No.
Once youve successfully connected, the networking entry from the charms bar will change to say its now Connected.

Also, the network icon from the taskbar notification area will change to depict the strength of your connection.

How to Disconnect from a Broadcasting Wireless Network

Disconnecting is as simple as finding the network name in the list, clicking or tapping it and selecting "Disconnect".

Troubleshooting Connections to Wireless Networks

If you followed the previous steps closely and you still are unable to connect to your broadcasting wireless network, 7 Tutorials has a few articles that you can reference for help:
  • Troubleshoot Internet Connection Problems over a Wireless Network - Windows has a built-in utility that can help determine the cause of your connectivity issues. This article details how to use it.
  • Troubleshoot Wireless Network Connection Problems by Yourself - This article provides a series of flowcharts that help determine common networking issues. By answering simple questions in series, you can troubleshoot common issues yourself.

Conclusion

Thats all there is to it. By following the steps mentioned above you can check for available networks and connect to those you have access to. Look out for open networks in public places. They wont require the use of a security key for access, but they can put you at risk. Avoid transmitting sensitive information unless youre behind a safely encrypted connection and always use a firewall and antivirus/spyware application. How to fix Weather gadget stops working issue?

In order to fix Weather Gadget I did a lots of research and found different misleading solution which actually does not fix this issue rather waste your time but just to let you know I am first mentioning what all I have found as claiming problem solved using these steps. Please make a note that none of these ever worked.

1. Start - type in Search box - COMMAND find at top of list- RIGHT CLICK - RUN AS ADMIN

sfc /scannow

2. Click on start and type regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSidebarSettings
On the right window create A New DWORD(32 Bit Value) with name “AllowElevatedProcess”
and set value as “1”.
Close Registry Editor
Restart

3. Start the command prompt by choosing run as administrator and type the following command lines.
cd "%programfiles%Windows Sidebar"
regsvr.exe wlsrvc.dll

4. Try  to re-register concerned dll files of Windows gadget when gadget stops working.

(a).Go to Start and under search type in CMD then Right Click on it and click on Run as administrator.

(b).  Then type these 3 commands one by one and hit Enter:

regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

(c).  Then reboot your Windows PC and test it.

Tried all the above mentioned steps. It never helped me.Weather gadget still does not work and shows can not connect to service. One of the solutions suggested to rather download another similar apps named Pro Weather Gadget from the following location.

But let me tell you just one simple way that worked instantly and fixed the problems.

First Method.

Step 1. Go to "C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows LiveServicesCache", open "Config.xml" (Right Mouse Click -> Edit) and save it (File -> Save) without doing any changes. After 10-20 seconds restart the gadget!

Second Method

A) Copy the following files and folder from a Windows 7 machine with a working stock weather gadget to a flash drive or network file share:

1. %localappdata%affected userlocalmicrosoftwindowswindows liveservicescacheconfig.xml (just copy the file)

2. %localappdata%affected userlocalmicrosoftwindowswindows sidebarcache168522d5-1082-4df2-b2f6-9185c31f9472 (copy entire folder which should contain one or more xml files)

3. %localappdata%affected userlocalmicrosoftwindowswindows sidebarsettings.ini (just copy the file)

B) Paste (OVERWRITE if ask) the copied folder and files into the same locations on the machine whose stock weather gadget is not working.

C) Drag the weather gadget back out and this time it should be working.

Third Method

Sometime you might receive an error message “Desktop gadget are managed by your system administrator.”

Open a Notepad then copy-paste the following text:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesWindowsSidebar]
“TurnOffSidebar”=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesWindowsSidebar]
“TurnOffSidebar”=-

Save it as Gadget_fix.reg. Run this File and reboot your Windows computer.

Note: Some of the website says weather gadget has been discontinued by microsoft and thats why weather gadget stops working. There is no such information and that is not correct.Microsoft told the user not to use the gadget as it makes your computer vulnerable.

Microsoft Says Windows Sidebar platform in Windows 7 and Windows Vista has serious vulnerabilities. Microsoft has retired the feature in newer releases of Windows. Gadgets could be exploited to harm your computer, access your computers files, show you objectionable content, or change their behavior at any time. An attacker could even use a gadget to take complete control of your PC.

If any of the gadgets intermittently does not start in windows 7 try this hotfix from microsoft described on page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979164.
