How to Create Responsive Website or Blogger Template

As the time goes, browsing websites from desktop computers decreasing and using Laptops, Tablets and Mobile devices increasing day by day. So why not to create our website design custom for each types of devices, that fits and looks more attractive for those devices to acquire the visitors entered from those devices.

Responsive web design is the approach that suggests in which design and development should respond user behavior and environment based on the size of the browser screen, platform and orientation.

Responsive web design includes the use of flexible layouts, images and intelligent use of media queries. You can make your blogger template responsive by using special tags in CSS. Media queries (@media) are such tags, which helps to make your CSS for every device screen size. You can make many media queries on CSS that matches for each screen size and you can put custom CSS codes for each media queries.

Here I have explained some steps for creating your blog responsive.

Step1: Add meta tags for responsiveness

Add the following meta tags on your blogger template using the following steps.

Go to blogger dashboard and click on template
Backup your template for the risk while editing template codes.
Paste the following codes between and <head> and </head> tags.
Save your blogger template.

For website also, paste the following codes between <head> and </head> tags.

Add the following codes to size the contents of blog equal to the device width.

Add the following codes to size the contents of blog equal to the device width and device height.

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, height=device-height/">

Add the following codes to size the contents of blog equal to the device width and initial zoom size.

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=2"/>

Add the following codes to size the contents of blog equal to the device width, initial zoom size and maximum zoom size.

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1/">

Instead or writing meta tags, you can do the same with the following codes in CSS.

}

}

@-moz-viewport {
                           width: device-width;

This works only for Mozilla browser, for other browsers you can use -o-, -webkit- and -ms- as prefixed properties.

Step2:Add media queries for each screen size

Add the following media queries between <![CDATA[*/ and ]]> tags.

@media screen and (max-width:320px){

You can add more media queries according to your need for different screen sizes and orientations and can also use min-width: to specify minimum width of screen.

To specify the screen orientations landscape or portrait use

@media screen and (max-width:480px) and (orientation:landscape) { }

Step3: Write custom CSS code for media queries

Now, you have to add custom CSS codes for each media queries. The default CSS properties written are replaced by the properties written within these media queries. Here is the sample CSS code written for mobile devices, you can add these codes for media screen with max-width 320 and 480 px.

Alternate method for adding CSS code with media queries

For the alternate method, you can write media queries with custom CSS codes on a single .css file and link it on header part of your blog or website as below.

You have to give the full path for "screen.css", where the file is placed.

You can also link different style sheet files for different screen sizes as below.

<link rel="stylesheet" media="screen and (max-width:1280px)" href="large.css"/>

<link rel="stylesheet" media="screen and (max-width:480px)" href="small.css"/>

After you click on create My Account your account will be created and you will be logged into 000webhost.But it will show the status of the website as Verification pending.So you need to verify your email for which you need to login to your email and go to inbox to click on the verification link that you have received from 000webhost .So you better check your inbox and follow the link in the mail to verify your email address and after the verification is done the status of your website under the list will show as active as shown in pic 1(e) .

Now you will need to go to your domain registrar to change the DNS server address i.e to tell the global DNS that your WebPages are held at 000webhost server.Here my domain registrar is Namecheap.com. So lets login there and you will see the home page of your account something like Picture 1-(g) below.

Then click on the first option “Your Domains/Products” on the right hand side. And then you will see the list of domain you have registered as shown in the pic 1-(i). So click on the domain name you want to modify the settings for.And then on next page look at the left hand side menu options for Domain Nameserver setup link as shown in picture1-(h) and click it to change the DNS server to ns01.000webhost.com and record 2 as ns02.000webhost.com and you are done.

Now after changing this value your domain registrar may take few hours to update the records.Once the records are updated the 000webhost will start displaying your page and your website is ups and running.

How to Upload Webpages to your website

welcome back!!

In the previous post we learned how to Register a Domain and Point it to the Hosting server.So by Now we have got our website address, as the Name has been decided and registered and we have also booked a space on the web server or created a free hosting account with 000webhost.com to keep our webpages. So now is the time to upload your webpages to the server so that your website can be accessed from anywhere and you can convey the message that you want to from your website.

So first you have to make sure you have all of your webpages at the same location i.e. in a same folder and keeping images in a separate sub folder is a recommended way.So look at the Picture below as I have arranged all the files related to my website in one location with a separate images folder.

Now this folder has a file named index.html which is the homepage of my website so your homepage must have file named as index.html.because this is the file a web server look for when it receives a request from any user.
So you have to upload all the files and folder with same file/folder structure to the web server.
Now the question is how to upload these files to the web server?
To upload files to web server there are multiple software available and they are known as FTP client.I found FileZilla the best so I am gonna use the same to show how to upload the webpages with the help of FileZilla.You can also download it by clicking here. Install the filezilla and open it, it would look like the picture below.

Now you need to know the three most basic information about the hosting web server to upload files.And those information are Host name, Username and Password.So I will go back to 000webhost.com and I will login to member area and will go to View account details to find the host Name, FTP username and password.and then I will Login.For my website burywire.com the Host Name is burywire.com.And the FTP Name is aXXXXXXX, So fill in the same information and connect to FTP server(Web server) to upload files.

Picture 2(bb) shows how does it look like after logged into the FTP server.

Now in the Picture above left hand side file/folder structure shows files/folders in your local computer while the File/folder on the right hand side shows the files/folder structure of Remote server.

Every web server or the hosting server will have a folder named public_html which is the default folder under which you have to upload your webpages for you domain (burywire.com in my case).

To upload files using FileZilla u just need to drag and drop them to this folder.Or open this folder "public_html" by double clicking on it and on the left hand side browse the folder you have all your webpages kept.And then start dragging and dropping them into the public_html folder one by one as shown in the pic 2-(cc) and once all the files and folders have been uploaded, Visit your website by just typing the url like www.burywire.com in any browser and your website is ups and running.
