How To Choose What Laptop System To Get


Basically there are only a few questions you need to ask.
1.Size

How big you need your laptop to be?
Keep in mind size is related to weight, the smaller the laptop the lighter it usually is.
<12.1>
13.1 inches (Mainstream Laptops)
14.1 inches (Mainstream Laptops)
15.1 inches (Mainstream Intensive Gaming Laptops)
16.1 inches (Desktop Replacement)
>16.1 inches (Desktop Replacement)

Usually if you need to move it around 14.1 -15.1 inches would be around the max for mobility.

2.Usage

Processor

Intel

For Intel Processor typically it is easily identified
Intel Core i (Processor Class Number) - (3 Digit SKU Number)(Alphabet 1)(Alphabet 2)

The Processor Class Number is either 3/5 or 7.
3 refers to the low end Processors
5 refers to the mainstream Processors
7 refers to the high end Processors
The 1st Digit SKU Number refers to the instruction set in the Processor.
3X0 means
  1. No Intel® Turbo Boost Technology,
  2. No Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d), 
  3. No Intel® Trusted Execution Technology, 
  4. No AES New Instructions
4X0 means
  1. No Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d), 
  2. No Intel® Trusted Execution Technology, 
  3. No AES New Instructions
5X0 and above
  1. All Instruction Set Supported
The 2nd Digit refers to the different Frequency of the Processor Family

For the alphabet there are a number of fixed Alphabets
M - Mainstream
Q - Quad Core (4 Cores, 8 Threads, No Intel HD Graphics due to high TDP)
X - Xtreme (Unlocked Multiplier)
U - Ultra Low Voltage (Low Frequency + Low Voltage)
L - Low Voltage (Low Voltage only)
E - Embedded (Not Upgradable)
AMD

For AMD Processor it is not as easy.

Generation Griffin
Identifier:

The Generation Caspian adds Quad Core Mobile Processor to the market.

Identifier: X NNN
X is either X for Black Edition (Unlocked Multiplier 45 Watt TDP ), N for MainStream (35 Watt TDP) & P for MainStream Lower Power Consumption (25 Watt TDP), V for Low End (25 TDP Single Core).

1st Digit refers to SKU
9 - Quad Core with 21.3GB/s HyperTransport
8 - Triple Core with 21.3GB/s HyperTransport
6 - Dual Core with 21.3GB/s HyperTransport
5 - Dual Core with 17GB/s HyperTransport
3 - Dual Core with 64bit Floating Point Unit (I suspect it is the old Caspian Refresh) (All the new Champlain should have 128Bit Floating Point Units) 17GB/s HyperTransport
1 - Single Core with 64bit Floating Point Unit

All Champlain Generation has 0.5 MB L2 Cache per CPU Core.

Graphics (For Gaming GPU > CPU)

For occasional gaming get at least some decent graphics from Nvidia, ATi.
For Intel Graphics if you must at least go for 3150,4500MHD or the new Intel HD Graphics.
They have Video Codec Decoding Abilties for Adobe Flash 10.1.
For ATi any Radeon HD will do, DO NOT go for Radeon Xpress they are obselete.
For Nvidia, go for anything below 8000 Series. 7000 series are obselete.
Both Nvidia 7000 Series and Radeon Xpress do not support GPU computing and DirectX 10
Use Notebookcheck as a rough guide for gaming performance.
Class 3, Class 2, Class 1 are suitable for occasional gaming.

For more intensive gaming consider getting Class 2 and Class 1 Graphics however they are most available only on 14.1/15.1 inch and above laptops.
Reason being more powerful graphics requires more powerful fansink these contributes to size hence usually they can only be found on 14.1 inch and above systems.

RAM
I dont really bother as it is very easy and cheap to upgrade laptop RAM.
You get more cost saving upgrading RAM yourself than buying a high RAM laptop.

Harddisk
Size is of no concern as they come with at least 120GB and that is more than sufficient.

Edit:
With regards to how good a laptop is in terms of quality you have to look at the design layout.
1) Google the motherboard prints of the particular laptop
2) Heatsink size must be sufficiently large enough particularly for AMD Processor Laptops and those with Nvidia/ATi GPU, larger mass allows higher heat capacity so temperature will not be too high.
The GPU, CPU and Northbridge must not be too close to each other.

To increase speed of PC/Laptop, to run operating system windows XP Vista 7 8 8.1, there are 13 easy ways . You can do it and make you PC or Laptop run more fast. Here is a setting that must be done:
1. Disable the Sound Scheme (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. How, press START - Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - Sounds - Sound scheme - No Sounds - Apply - OK.


2. Time to display startup and recovery (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. How, press START - Control Panel - System - Advanced - Startup and Recovery - Settings - System startup
  • Time to display list of operating systems            = 30 seconds, changed to = 1 seconds
  • Time to display recovery options when needed = 30 seconds, changed to = 10 seconds
 
3. Performance Options (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. How, press START - Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance - Settings - Visual Effects - Let windows choose whats best for my computer, changed to - Adjust for best performance - Apply - OK

After that, follow next step

For Win XP
START - Control Panel - Display - Appearance - Windows and buttons - from Windows Classic style - changed to Windows XP style - Apply. Then, click Effects - remove all check - OK - OK.


For Win 7, 8
Right click on desktop - Personalization - select themes


4. Delete all Scheduled Tasks (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. How, press START - Control Panel - Scheduled Tasks - delete all Scheduled Tasks. Delete Scheduled Tasks can be do with CCleaner software.

5. System Configuration Utility, Startup and Services (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. How, press START - run - msconfig - OK

Startup: only activate anti virus, for other programs, can be disabled, if you think not required.

Services: only activate anti virus, for other programs, can be disabled, if you think not required.
When finished, do the restart.


6. Window Metrics - MinAnimate=1 (for Windows XP)
This method can be applied to Windows XP. How, press START - run - regedit - OK

HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Control Panel - Desktop - WindowMetrics - MinAnimate -  Value data=1 - OK - restart.

7. Disk Cleanup for all drives (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. How, right click drive C - Properties - Disk Cleanup - give a check all items. Then, click More Options - System Restore - Clean up - Yes - OK. Repeat process to drive D, E, F.
 
8. Check disk for all drives (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. How, right click drive C - Properties - Tools - Error checking - Check now - give a check all items (automatically fix file system errors, and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors) - Start. Repeat process to drive D, E, F.
9. Disk Defragmenter (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7. How, right click drive C - Properties - Tools - Defragmentation - Defragment Now - select drive - Defragment. Repeat process to drive D, E, F.
10. Delete installed programs, that you no longer use (for Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
This method can be applied to Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8

11. Download and install CCleaner free (support Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)

13. Turn ReadyBoost (for Windows 7)
ReadyBoost can speed up your computer by using, USB flash drives and memory cards.
  1. Plug a flash drive into your computer.
  2. In the Autoplay, under General options, click Speed up my system.
  3. Right click a flash drive - Properties - ReadyBoost, and then do one of the following:
  • Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost : to use the maximum available space on the flash drive for ReadyBoost. Windows will leave any files already stored on the device, but itll use the rest to boost your system speed.
  • Use this device : to use less than the maximum available space on the device for ReadyBoost, and then move the slider to choose the amount of available space on the device you want to use.

How to Mod your Laptop VGA BIOS


Basically there are 2 locations where the VGA BIOS in laptops.
Some OEMS embed the VGA BIOS in the EFI/BIOS in your laptops,
other OEMs have a separate VGA BIOS firmware on the VGA Card itself.

TYPE 1
As a general rule laptops with discrete MXM board modules like the (picture below) has
the VGA BIOS as a separate piece of code located on the module itself.
It is NOT part of the EFI/BIOS of the Mainboard.

TYPE II
For OEM Boards with a GPU embedded on the Mainboard itself the VGA BIOS usually exist as a chunk of Code inside the BIOS of the Mainboard itself.
(Picture below shows the GPU on the top left corner on the mainboard covered by the black plastic)


Nowadays more and more OEMs are using TYPE II method of integration because
1) They can make the laptop more compact and light because separate MXM modules increase the thickness of the laptop.
2) It is cheaper to integrate everything on the mainboard using BGA soldering rather than have PCI-E connectors.

This article talks about modifying Type II VGA BIOS only.

First you have to identify the Type of Firmware the laptop uses, this is depends on the BIOS Vendor used by the OEM. An OEM can use a different BIOS vendor for different models.

The most prominent BIOS vendors are: Insyde, AMI, Phoenix, AWARD and Intel.

On the website mydigitallife you can find many tools coded by the members for BIOS disassembly.

We are going to use their tools to dissemble the VGA Module from the BIOS.

In this example, the Aspire 4740G uses the Insyde BIOS so download the PhoenixTool which is capable of dissembling Phoenix, Insyde, Dell and other EFI BIOS.

After downloading the PhoenixTool we decompress the PhoenixTool contents to a new folder.


We extract the PhoenixTool to a folder called  "NEW". The main program is called PhoenixTool.exe
After decompressing the disssembly Tool we proceed to download the EFI/BIOS from the OEM website and decompress it as well..


From Above we can see the Complete BIOS Firmware is called NALG0x64.fd.
BIOS usually uses file extension such as BIN, ROM, BIO, WPH, FD and many more. Different BIOS Vendor usually use a different identifier.


When we use the PhoenixTool.exe to open the NALG0x64.fd file, the tool also display the emergency Insyde Recovery Filename.


After the modules have been dissembled you should see the screen above. The modules have been dissembled in a newly created folder called "DUMP" where the original NALG0x64.fd is located.


The Red Box shows the VGA BIOS module. The VGA BIOS module is usually a 70-60KB file, to confirm if it is the VGA Module, you open it with a dissembler and check the content, you should see Nvidia text reference in the binary.


The dissembly of the file shows a lot of Nvidia Text Reference to further confirm if it is the exact module you want you should Google the SKU Code in the example above it is "GT218" which references to G310M Nvidia GPU.
Some laptop BIOS has more than 1 VGA BIOS because 1 Model can have many variations of Different Nvidia SKU GPUs.A good example would be the Acer Aspire 4741G.

Next Download the Nibitor from MVKTECH website. Open the VGA Module and choose "Tools" Fermi Voltage Editor (For Newer Generation of Nvidia GPUs).
For ATi you would probably use Radeon BIOS Editor (RBE).
As you can see the original BIOS has the P3 state which is the default state (the lowest performance state) set at a voltage is 0.85V that is why when using HWMonitor you will never see the voltage drop below 0.85.
The lowest performance state can however use a lower voltage of 0.80V.


So we set the P3 State to 0.8V and Apply. Save the Modified VGA BIOS and exit.


Using EzH20, a Insyde BIOS Editor we open the original NALG0x64.fd file.


Select Components -> Replace Module. Each Insyde Module has a Unique GUID identifier.
8 Character - 4 Character - 4 Character - 4 Character - 12 Character
The Module we seek has the identifier "AC1E1B97-69C4-475D-8471-0F3893802F96"



Under "Module to Load" browse to the modified VGA BIOS.


Under "Change ROM GUID" enter the original identifier: "AC1E1B97-69C4-475D-8471-0F3893802F96"
Then Patch the Firmware.


Finally Save the Modified Firmware and flash it with the Insyde flashit Tool while replacing the original NALG0x64.fd with the modified NALG0x64.fd.

--- SEBELUM MASUK INSTALASI ---
1. Pastikan ada berapa partisi / drive yg ada di PC/Laptop ( C,D,E,....dst). Cek lewat partition master.
2. Pastikan hanya ada 1-3 partisi bertipe PRIMARY. Cek lewat partition master.
3. Pastikan partisi tipe LOGICAL yang di resize. Cek lewat partition master.
4. Pastikan Harddisk yang digunakan bukan tipe Dynamic MBR. Cek lewat partition master (Urungkan niat menginstal)
5. Pastikan Bahan yg di download tidak corrupt.
6. Rileks aja (Bootloop tinggal ulang lagi dari awal instalasi)

--- INSTALASI --- (BAGIAN : PARTISI BARU EXT3)
1. Install Partition Master di Windows.
2. Buat partisi baru dengan cara resize partisi terakhir (misal partisi terakhir drive :D . Klik drive :D pilih icon resize).
3. Buat Unallocated size sebesar memory yg diinginkan (misal gamer : 20.000 MB / 20 GB)
4. Unallocated size harus berada di akhir partisi setelah drive (:D misal)
5. Klik pada Unallocated size dan pilih icon Create Partition
6. Create as : Logical ;;;; File systems : EXT3 (wajib EXT3, semisal pake yg lain tidak akan support root dan size memory hanya maksimal 2 GB)
7. Klik OK Lalu Klik icon APPLY (Jangan centang reboot setelah proses partisi)
--- INSTALASI --- (BAGIAN : KHUSUS PARTISI NTFS/FAT32)
1. Install Partition Master di Windows.
2. Buat partisi baru dengan cara resize partisi terakhir (misal partisi terakhir drive :D . Klik drive :D pilih icon resize).
3. Buat Unallocated size sebesar memory yg diinginkan (hanya bisa maksimal 4 GB yaitu 2 GB system + 2 GB data.img)
4. Unallocated size harus berada di akhir partisi setelah drive (drive :D misal)
5. Klik pada Unallocated size dan pilih icon Create Partition
6. Create as : Logical ;;;; File systems : FAT32 / NTFS (tidak support root dan size memory hanya maksimal 2 GB)
7. Klik OK Lalu Klik icon APPLY (Jangan centang reboot setelah proses partisi)
8. Install GRUB2WIN ( http://www.mediafire.com/download/risvqc89ca99384/grub2.rar ), ekstrak semua isi supaya menjadi folder dan letakkan pada partisi C (partisi windows).
9. Edit isi grub.cfg pada bagian :

set gfxmode=1024x768,auto  ==> resolusi PC/Laptop
(hd0,6) ==> ini diartikan berada di harddisk ke-1 dan partisi ke-6

menjadi :

set gfxmode=[resolusi PC-mu],auto  ==> ubah sesuai resolusi PC/Laptop
(hd0,x) ==> ubah x menjadi urutan sda (misal partisi android x86 berada di sda4 maka isikan angka 4)

10. SAVE.


--- INSTALASI --- (BAGIAN : OS KE FLASHDISK)
1. Tancapkan flashdisk (Min : 2GB)
2. Install Unetbootin (Portable : jadi tinggal dibuka aja)
3. Centang Disk Image,, Pastikan pada Drive terpilih adalah Flashdisk,,,
4. Klik pada bagian titik 3 (. . .)
5. Cari .iso OS yg akan dimasukan pada flashdisk.
6. Klik OK (Tunggu sebentar hingga selesai, proses : 4 menit)
7. Jangan langsung di REBOOT...

--- INSTALASI --- (BAGIAN : PINDAH APK KE FLASHDISK)
1. Pastikan flashdisk ada.
2. Pindahkan APK yg ingin diinstal setelah semua terinstal. Wajib Terminal Emulator--
3. Bagian ini digunakan saat ingin menginstal semua .apk tanpa download dahulu.

--- INSTALASI --- (BAGIAN : INSTALL KHUSUS PARTISI EXT3)
1. Restart PC / Laptop.
2. Pastikan Flashdisk tertancap.
3. Masuk BIOS -- Saat booting segera tekan tombol F2 (pd Laptop) / DEL (pd PC).
4. Pilih Boot Order (First Boot via Flashdisk / USB HDD) supaya saat booting penyimpanan yg terdeteksi pertama adalah Flashdisk.
5. Klik F10 - Klik YES / Y
6. PC akan restart dan akan masuk list pilihan (red:GRUB) (jika belum masuk, restart ulang saat booting tekan F10 / F12, Pilih Flashdisk)
7. Setelah masuk GRUB, pilih Without Install (untuk sekedar mencoba tanpa install) atau pilih Install (Untuk langsung install ke harddisk)
8. Tunggu sebentar hingga masuk ke pilihan drive yg akan digunakan untuk menyimpan OS.
9. Pilih yg bertipe Linux dan sizenya sesuai dengan yg telah dibuat sebelumnya..(sda disesuaikan tiap device berbeda urutan)
10. Akan Masuk ke pilihan Partition Type (Wajib pilih DO NOT FORMAT) karena sebelumnya kita pastikan partisi tersebut masih kosong dan sudah bertipe EXT3.
11. Tunggu sebentar hingga proses selesai.
12. Jika ada pilihan akan install GRUB atau tidak (Pilih YES install GRUB)
13. Jika ada pilihan terdapat partisi windows pada sda1 (Pilih YES)
14. Tunggu sebentar hingga proses selesai.
15. Pilih REBOOT.

16. Cabut Flashdisk.


--- INSTALASI --- (BAGIAN : SETELAH INSTALL EXT3)
1. Melanjutkan dari tahap sebelumnya. Setelah REBOOT dan cabut Flashdisk
2. Jika berhasil akan ada list pilihan dual boot yaitu Android dan Windows.
3. Pilih yg pertama (Android) untuk masuk Android.. dan Pilih (Windows) untuk masuk Windows.
4. Masuk Android.
5. Tunggu sebentar akan ada logo android tanda proses sedang berjalan (berlangsung 3-4 menit)
6. SELAMAT ANDA SUDAH BERHASIL INSTALL ANDROID.
--- INSTALASI --- (BAGIAN : INSTALL KHUSUS PARTISI FAT32/NTFS)
1. Restart PC / Laptop.
2. Pastikan Flashdisk tertancap.
3. Masuk BIOS -- Saat booting segera tekan tombol F2 (pd Laptop) / DEL (pd PC).
4. Pilih Boot Order (First Boot via Flashdisk / USB HDD) supaya saat booting penyimpanan yg terdeteksi pertama adalah Flashdisk.
5. Klik F10 - Klik YES / Y
6. PC akan restart dan akan masuk list pilihan (red:GRUB) (jika belum masuk, restart ulang saat booting tekan F10 / F12, Pilih Flashdisk)
7. Setelah masuk GRUB, pilih Without Install (untuk sekedar mencoba tanpa install) atau pilih Install (Untuk langsung install ke harddisk)
8. Tunggu sebentar hingga masuk ke pilihan drive yg akan digunakan untuk menyimpan OS.
9. Pilih yg bertipe FAT32 / NTFS dan sizenya sesuai dengan yg telah dibuat sebelumnya..(biasanya urutan angka sda.. paling akhir. Misal sda0,sda1,sda2,sda6 maka yg dipilih adalah sda6 [lihat juga size nya sesuai tidak])
10. Akan Masuk ke pilihan Partition Type (Wajib pilih DO NOT FORMAT) karena sebelumnya kita pastikan partisi tersebut masih kosong dan sudah bertipe FAT32 / NTFS.
11. Tunggu sebentar hingga proses selesai.
12. Jika ada pilihan akan install GRUB atau tidak (Pilih NO install GRUB)
13. Jika ada pilihan terdapat partisi windows pada sda1 (Pilih YES)

--- INSTALASI --- (BAGIAN : SETELAH INSTALL FAT32 / NTFS)
1. Melanjutkan dari tahap sebelumnya. Setelah REBOOT dan cabut Flashdisk
2. Jika berhasil akan ada list pilihan dual boot yaitu Windows dan GRUB SYSTEMS.
3. Pilih GRUB SYSTEMS.
4. Pilih yg pertama (Android X-86) untuk masuk Android.
5. Tunggu sebentar akan ada logo android tanda proses sedang berjalan (berlangsung 3-4 menit)
6. SELAMAT ANDA SUDAH BERHASIL INSTALL ANDROID.


--- TROUBLESHOOTING -- (BAGIAN : INSTALL APP TAPI FORCE CLOSE)
1. Ini dikarenakan ada beberapa aplikasi yang memerlukan IMEI. (IMEI bawaan tidak ada harus isi manual).
2. Caranya dengan install terminal emulator. Masuk dan ketikan su (untuk masuk akses root)
3. Lalu keluar terminal emulator. Pilih app XPOSED FRAMEWORK.
4. Install FRAMEWORK-nya... JANGAN PILIH REBOOT. Masuk MODULE, centang IMEI CHANGER.
5. Masuk terminal emulator lagi.
Ketik :
# su (terus enter)
# echo 0x98> /data/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/conf/jit_reset_offset (terus enter)
# reboot

6. Tunggu proses booting berlangsung.
7. Jika sudah.. Masuk pada IMEI CHANGER. Masukan IMEI yg diinginkan terserah (15 digit angka). Tekan APPLY.
8. Dengan cara ini tidak akan FORCE CLOSE lagi.
--- TROUBLESHOOTING -- (BAGIAN : FORCE CLOSE AKIBAT DOWNLOAD .iso bukan dari LINK diatas)
1. Ini dikarenakan android yang digunakan adalah versi X86 dan harus menginstal library ARM supaya bisa menjalankan .apk
2. Caranya dengan membuka terminal emulator.
Ketik :
# su (enter)
# enable_houdini (enter) - PC/Laptop harus dalam keadaan online (Tunggu sebentar hingga proses download selesai)
# reboot

3. Tunggu proses booting berlangsung.
4. Dengan cara ini tidak akan FORCE CLOSE lagi.

--- TROUBLESHOOTING -- (BAGIAN : HAPUS PARTISI ANDROID X86)
1. Pastikan mempunyai CD Windows yang sedang dipakai saat ini (boleh berbeda tipe misal Win 7 Ultimate tapi CD Win 7 Home Edition.)
2. Masuk Windows dan hapus partisi android X86 yang diinginkan. Delete lalu APPLY.
3. Laptop akan error. Ini dikarenakan GRUB yang dipakai adalah milik android X86 yang dihapus.
4. Masukkan Disc recovery / instalasi windows 7 ke CD/DVD drive
5. Booting menggunakan CD/DVD drive
6. Setelah windows muncul pilihan...pilih “REPAIR YOUR COMPUTER.”
7. Pilihan Repair akan muncul, lalu klik Command Prompt.
8. Ketik di kotak command prompt :

#bootrec.exe/fixmbr
#bootrec.exe/fixboot

9. Done
10. REBOOT
